What is Sage Enterprise Management (formerly SageX3)?
This post provides an overview of Sage Enterprise Management and answers some commonly asked questions about the product.
Sage Business Cloud Enterprise Management is an enterprise-wide platform for total business management in complex organisations. Formerly known as Sage X3, the solution was renamed in line with Sage’s evolution to a more open, cloud-based software ecosystem.
A new breed of enterprise solution, Sage Enterprise Management models the best features of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software but in a more flexible, fast and intuitive way.
That means you get business-wide functionality and centralised knowledge management within a single database—delivered via a simpler and more configurable platform that’s easy-to-use and can be scaled and augmented effortlessly.
Why was Sage X3 renamed Sage Enterprise Management?
Sage’s ultimate platform for total business management has had a number of iterations over the years. Sage originally acquired a firm called Adonix in 2005. The Adonix ERP product— known as Adonix X3—then became Sage ERP X3, which was eventually shortened to Sage X3.
As cloud-based technologies became a clear driver of competitive advantage, Sage’s product philosophy and development approaches shifted too.
The company launched the Sage Business Cloud in 2017—an online marketplace that makes it easy for Sage customers to pick and choose from a broad selection of Sage software and complementary applications developed by independent software vendors (ISVs).
Sage’s suite of cloud products were also renamed and Sage X3 became Sage Enterprise Management.
What type of business is better off using Sage Enterprise Management?
Sage Enterprise Management is ideal for mid-market businesses exceeding $30 million in turnover that want a more integrated approach to managing complex processes, data sources, organisational structures, and team workflows.
Sage Enterprise Management is ideal for businesses that:
- Have an extensive value chain that requires masterful coordination of customers, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, distribution and service processes.
- Want to improve financial consolidation, tax management, and team collaboration across multiple businesses, countries, branches, franchisees, or warehouses.
- Need more sophisticated financial control with General Ledger, cost accounting, budgeting and insights into cash flow, cost management, and growth opportunities.
Does Sage Enterprise Management have the right functionality for my industry?
Ambitious businesses in a wide variety of industries adopt Sage Enterprise Management to simplify how they run their business, including all aspects of financial, supply chain, production, and customer management.
In particular, Sage Enterprise Management is well-equipped for businesses in these industries:
- Distribution: Including wholesale trade, distribution of medical equipment and consumables, transport and logistics and retailers.
- Manufacturing: Including discrete, process and configure-to-order manufacturing, and more specifically companies involved in the production of food and beverages, agribusiness, chemicals and paints, and pharmaceuticals, supplements and biopharma.
- Service and project-based industries: Including any industry that relies on excellence in sales, customer service and project costing, such as consulting, engineering, IT, and property development.
What are the key modules and functions?
Your people, processes, and technologies should feed into one high-level, real-time view of your business performance. If that’s not the case—usually because of departmental silos, unconnected software, and piecemeal data capture—you will benefit from Sage Enterprise Management.
The core functionality covers:
- Financial management
- Manufacturing and production
- Sales, purchasing and inventory
Features that growing, mid-sized companies especially value in Sage Enterprise Management include:
- The solution’s proficiency in helping group CFOs and finance managers to manage multiple companies across multiple geographies and countries.
- Functionality that makes it possible to run a paperless warehouse, balance inventory levels effectively and manage multiple warehouses with skill.
- The sophisticated Production Scheduler tool which enables more accurate forecasting, more confident procurement, and scheduling, and improved efficiency on the production line. More recently this functionality was enhanced to support even more precise planning.
A broad range of complementary, integrated solutions can expand your capabilities with ease. This includes applications to support people management, e-commerce, data governance, document management, logistics and more.
How is the product built? The architecture explained
The solution is designed to be highly scalable with cloud infrastructure as its backbone, leveraging cutting-edge technologies including hosting by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Sage Enterprise Management supports three deployment methods: on-premise, hosted in a private cloud, or software-as-a-service (SaaS). The system’s architecture is flexible enough to facilitate rapid scale-ups regardless of the deployment option chosen: it always meets growing businesses requirements.

How much does Sage Enterprise Management cost?
The price of your Sage Enterprise Management license will depend on the kind of deployment you choose, the breadth of functionality you want to adopt, the number of users and any extra features you need.
One of the most popular approaches is to implement the cloud-based version, which enables businesses to pay monthly and draw on operating expenditure and reduce their IT costs, rather than making a large capital investment.
